MTA vendor spending by district

Turning statewide procurement into local evidence.

For Reinvent Albany, I organized nine years of MTA vendor data by legislative district and produced 239 automated fact sheets. Readers could see which companies received payments and how much spending reached their district.

Reinvent Albany map of MTA vendor spending by New York congressional district, 2014–2022
The original Reinvent Albany map presents MTA vendor payments by congressional, State Senate, and Assembly district. Data cover 2014–2022.

Where the money went

MTA investment reaches businesses well beyond the subway and commuter rail network. A statewide total leaves those local connections difficult to see. This project translated the underlying vendor records into district maps and concise profiles built around payment totals and the largest recipients.

Reinvent Albany’s published analysis found nearly $26 billion in payments to New York vendors from 2014 through 2022, with recipients in every State Senate and congressional district. The maps let readers move between the statewide pattern and an individual district.

A fact sheet for each district

The 239 automated fact sheets put the same questions in the same place: the district’s total, its leading vendors, and the period covered. Together with the maps, they gave legislators and advocates a common set of figures for discussing transit investment in local terms.

The Senate District 26 sheet shows how that format works: a short overview, a district payment total, and a ranked vendor list on one page.
