NJPIRG and the Amalgamated Transit Union distributed over 50,000 anti-fare hike fliers December 20 on NJ Transit buses. The leaflet says Governor Whitman is considering raising transit fares as part of the Administration's deliberations on renewing the NJ Transportation Trust Fund. It
urges riders to reject any such proposal, arguing that NJ Transit riders pay more of the system's cost at the fare box than do riders on other systems. Carl Golden, a spokesperson for Whitman, said the fliers are inaccurate and misleading. Marjorie Angelo at NJPIRG pointed out that in September
Whitman specifically included transit fare hikes as a possibility for the Trust Fund renewal's financing. Golden said a decision has not been made on the Trust Fund and that if fares were raised it would not be to support the Trust Fund.
