NYC Dept. of Transportation officials have made moves to cut back the elaborate reconstruction of the Whitehall Staten Island ferry terminal in Manhattan, but are proceeding with plans for new St. George (Staten Island) to midtown high-speed boat service. The new ferry line should be

working by early 1996. It will run from an old fireboat slip in St. George to existing ferry landings at either West 39th or West 44th Street. New York Fast Ferry, the operator selected to run the service, is proceeding with construction of three 350-passenger high-speed ferries. Meanwhile, the new

Long Island City-midtown ferry which began service this fall reports a virtually nil ridership (20 per day, total), and is planning to cut fares and increase advertising. Staten Island Advance, NY Newsday
