Mayor Jack Alter says traffic from the George Washington Bridge costs Fort Lee, NJ taxpayers $5 million a year in increased road maintenance, police and insurance, and he's asking the Port Authority to compensate them for it. Alter also charges that Port Authority police have cut back on
traffic flow and enforcement duty, leaving the town to pick up the slack. The Port Authority refused to discuss the issues with Fort Lee until Alter recently threatened to block local access roads to the bridge during rush hour. The Campaign plans to contact Alter in the near future to compare notes
on the town's cost-of-traffic calculations.
