They had to destroy the town to save it (from traffic congestion). WNBC 11:00 O'Clock News for Oct. 23 featured town officials from North Plainfield, NJ who had recently won a one year moratorium on action by the NJ Dept. of Transportation to widen Route 22. The widening project,
which had reached the final design stage before town officials were able to wrestle it to a halt, required the removal of a strip of businesses that made up over half of the town's tax base. It also would have put a lane through the local high school's football field and brought other life-quality
reducing effects. The moratorium is to permit ongoing consultation and discussion between the town and DOT.
