The Daily News reported December 19 that the Pataki transition team may make the job of MTA Chair part-time. The move would give the 17-member MTA board more authority over the downstate NY transit system, and widen the field for finding a Pataki Administration replacement for
current Chair Peter Stangl. Pataki's leading choice to succeed Stang] is said to be Alfred DelliBovi, chief of the Urban Mass Transit Administration (now FTA) during the Reagan Administration and an ally of Senator Al D'Amato. During the Reagan and Bush years, UMTA was known for a
research program that seemed aimed at discrediting the economic and transportation rationales for investing in transit.
