In a Halloween Day protest, Franklin Avenue Shuttle riders and NYC transit advocates called on the MTA to save the shuttle by restoring funding for construction. Handing out leaflets that said Don't Make a Ghost of the Franklin Avenue Shuttle, the activists urged riders to call MTA

Chair Peter Stang]. The Shuttle is at risk of closing if the MTA keeps its rehabilitation program on hold, participants said. The leaflet also asked riders to call NY State Assembly Member Albert Vann, who comes from Brooklyn and heads the powerful Assembly Corporations Committee.

Advocates noted that while subway station work continues elsewhere, Franklin Avenue Shuttle riders have to wait in dark stations on plywood platforms. The Coalition to Save the Franklin Avenue Shuttle includes the NYC Environmental Justice Alliance, the Straphangers Campaign, First Church

of God and Christ and Brooklyn Community Boards #8 and #9.

Meanwhile, on Nov. 3, subway riders staged a rally at the Broadway and 72nd Street Station in Manhattan, responding to news that the station renovation project there had been deferred indefinitely for lack of funds. Participants said the rally was designed to call attention to the station's

dangerous conditions. NY State Assembly Member Scott Stringer invited Mayor Giuliani and MTA Chair Peter Stang] to come to the station to witness heavy rush hour platform crowding.
