NJ Transit has released a new handbook for town officials, planners, developers and citizens on how to make communities and developments transit friendly. NJ Transit director Shirley DeLibero said that the book is designed to induce more local officials and interests to develop closer

working ties with her agency, and help spread people-friendly, environment-friendly, community friendly planning throughout the state. The 130-page how-to handbook encourages towns to treat transit stops as community assets that can help anchor development in multi-use centers. Chapters

cover land-use and development patterns, pedestrian and bicycle access and circulation, automobile access and parking, station-area environments, implementation and a sample station-area master plan. NJ Transit will send the book to any municipality requesting it. The Federal Transit

Administration, which funded the book, plans to distribute it nationwide as part of its Liveable Communities Initiative. Rutgers Environmental Law Clinic commented extensively on the book as it was developed. For more info or to order, call 201-491-7814.
