The Monmouth County Planning Board has announced that it has adopted a resolution on the recommendation of their railroad transportation advisory committee, headed by Irving Feist of Shrewsbury, urging the newly-created Metropolitan Rapid Transit Commission to include Monmouth County in their overall study of the New York-New Jersey metropolitan transit problems.
Pointing out the fact that Monmouth County has always been considered part of the Port of New York Metropolitan area by all authorities, E. Donald Sterner, chairman of the county planning board, stated: “While we all realize the urgent need for the development of a comprehensive plan to solve the transit problems of metropolitan North Jersey and greater New York, certainly in planning ahead and anticipating the future growth and development of the entire Port of New York area, Monmouth County, due to its present exceptional growth in population and the resulting rapid expansion of its year-round commuter traffic, should be included in the studies by the engineers of the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Commission.”
“In our railroad planning for the future of Monmouth County,” Mr. Sterner said, “We are hopeful that we shall be able to secure new stations and better parking facilities through consolidation, more modern equipment and faster and more frequent service. However, to accomplish this objective we will need the complete cooperation of the citizens and officials of every municipality along the New York and Long Branch Railroad in developing a fair and equitable program. It is this entire program that we hope we may be able to present to the commission’s engineers for consideration in their overall study of the transit problems of the New York Metropolitan area.”
