Jersey City, NJ – The Jersey City Merchants Council today claimed that the Page plan for a rapid transit loop into New York is a threat to the entire business community of Jersey City.
A Council transit study committee called for further study of the plan proposed by Metropolitan Rapid Transit Commission Project Director Arthur W. Page this May. The Council claims his proposed system would have a disastrous effect on Jersey City and Hudson County in general.
Specifically, the committee objects to a suggestion that Hudson County pay about $1,560,000 a year as its portion of a yearly deficit estimated at about $12 million for the entire rapid-transit district. It also claims a transit loop into Manhattan bypasses Hudson County shopping centers.
The report says: “Jersey City and all cities are struggling for their very existence. Only the suburbs are interested in the improvement of these services, and certainly they should pay their own way into Manhattan if they want to enjoy the luxury of suburban living. And, of course, the business communities cannot be happy at the thought of subsidizing the improvement of Manhattan’s business.”
