TRENTON, Aug. 1—The membership of the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Commission was appointed today by Gov. Alfred E. Driscoll before his departure on a Maine vacation.

State Senator David Van Alstyne, Republican of Englewood, who had headed a regional intrastate projects commission since 1950, was among the five members. His group recently gave the Legislature its report, which recommended a new rail tunnel, connecting North Jersey with Manhattan at about Forty-fifth Street.

A major objective of the new commission is to seek faster commuter service.

Appointed with Senator Van Alstyne were: Kenneth J. Hanau of Upper Montclair, executive vice president of the Wagner Baking Company; Frank Scott Jr. of Elizabeth, president of the Morey Larus Laundry; Mayor Charles F. Krause of North Plainfield, chairman of the Inter-Municipal Group for Better Rail Service. The appointments are temporary pending confirmation by the Senate in the fall.

The legislation creating the commission provided a $50,000 appropriation for its studies of transit improvements.
